What is PVC?
The name PVC is derived from the acronym for Polyvinyl Chloride (English name for polyvinyl chloride or polyvinyl chloride). It is the third most produced synthetic plastic in the world.
It is also a type of plastic that is not completely composed of petroleum. This gives PVC two advantages over other types of plastics; not overuse this limited natural resource and be less flammable.
Depending on the chemical treatment it receives, PVC can acquire a more rigid or more flexible composition, which gives the material a considerable range of practical uses.
And what is its origin?
PVC emerged accidentally, synthesized in 1872 by chemist Eugen Baumann when he left a container of vinyl chloride exposed to the sun, causing a solid piece of polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, to appear in it.
Despite having appeared in the 19th century, PVC only became commercially viable and produced on a large scale when, in 1926, Waldo Semon, an inventor from Alabama, together with the BF Goodrich Company, discovered a method of plasticizing vinyl through of additives. This process increased the malleability of the plastic and expanded its possibilities of use and application.
After popularization, PVC began to be used in a multitude of objects used by us on a daily basis. The applications occur in all sectors and in varied functions. They range from machine parts and components to construction installations. PVC is also used in the manufacture of toys, packaging, credit cards, clothes and music industry records (including popularly known as vinyls).
